Q. Do I need therapy to recover from abuse, assault, or rape?

A. Generally speaking, therapy can be very helpful getting you started on the road to healing. There isn't a person alive who would not benefit from a few sessions with a reputable therapist. If you have been abused, therapy becomes even more urgent. You have suffered horrible trauma. It is unreasonable to think you can handle it all by yourself.

Rape, assault and incest can cause many mental health problems. Ask yourself why your friends are suggesting therapy. Are they acting out of love and concern? Then they are probably right. I encourage you to reconsider your stance against getting therapy. Look into yourself. You know that feeling of pain in your chest, or in your belly? A good therapist can make that go away. You don't have to hurt like this. You have the right to be happy. Read What Can a Therapist Do For Me? for more information.
