Teach Your Children to Think
Tuesday February 3, 2004
In Florida, another Amber Alert has been issued, for an eleven-year-old girl named Carlie Brucia. A videotape of a surveillance camera at a carwash showed a man stopping her, talking to her, then dragging her away by the arm.
These situations just break my heart. The tape shows there was no struggle; he held her wrist and led her away. As you know, these incidents are never the victim's fault; they do spur me, however to remind everyone that we need to teach our children that if a stranger approaches them, to yell 'Fire', run in the other direction, and struggle with all their might to stop being taken away. We also need to specifically give them permission to do so. Sometimes we get so involved in teaching children to be polite that we neglect to give them permission to fight when their instincts tell them to.
